Home Security Tips
You work hard so that you can buy a home for you and your family, a home you fill with things to make your life happier and easier, a home you look forward to coming home to every evening. But how to keep that home safe? The housing market isn't the only aspect of home care which has suffered as a result of the recession; statistics also show that instances of burglaries have risen dramatically. However, there are ways you can help lower the danger of break-in to your home. The Home Office and the ABI (Associate of British Insurers) have published a document called 'Insurance Advice on Home Security' which provides you with tips on how to make your home safer and more secure.
- Check potential entrance points: These could be doors or windows, so ensure both have thick, sturdy frames. It's all very well having expensive, technical locks fitted, but a door is only as strong as its frame. Also think objectively about how easy it would be to break your door or window- for example, the ABI suggests that wooden doors should be at least 44mm thick. Double glazing is also an extremely good idea, both for heat retention and for safety.
- Light it up: Install outside lighting! A burglar will think twice about trying to break into your home if his tentative presence up your drive results in his being lit up like a Christmas tree; it also means neighbours or passers-by will be able to see any intruders. Another good idea is, if you're going away on holiday or for any extended time, have a neighbour or friend pop round to switch lights on and off, open and draw curtains- anything to make it look like someone is at home.
- Be Cautious: It's a well-known fact that many people leave a spare key outside their house in a convenient location like in a flower-pot or under a mat. Unfortunately, burglars know this too. Tempting as it is to leave a key out in case you forget yours, it's not worth the risk of a burglar being able to simply waltz into your home. Another good idea is to fit a door-chain or bar and door viewer, allowing you to see whoever is knocking on your door and preventing them being able to force their way inside.
- If the worst happens: Obviously, no amount of precautions can make your home impenetrable; this means it's a good idea to have home insurance as well. Home insurance covers damage to or loss of the structure and permanent fittings in your house- meaning any vandalism, any broken windows or doors could be covered by your insurance. Make sure you shop around to find the best deal; visit comparison sites and try reputable providers like Kwik Fit Insurance, where you can get a home insurance quote on their site.
